The introduction of the AP Capstone Program at Habersham Central High School has set us apart from the 2,292 public high schools in Georgia# and the more than 22,000 high schools nationwide.^ We are one of 44 high schools in the state of Georgia and one of 1,100 plus high schools nationwide to offer the AP Capstone Program for our students.* Our inaugural AP Capstone class consists of 25 juniors that are on track to graduate with an AP Capstone Diploma, as well as earning credit in AP Language and Composition and honors American literature this year. Thirty-two seniors are currently enrolled in the AP Seminar class as well. These seniors are also earning credit in AP Literature and Composition and honors British literature in conjunction with the AP Seminar class.
The AP Capstone Program provides a unique learning experience for Habersham Central students and equips them with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills necessary to be successful in their post-secondary education goals. It cultivates curious, independent, and collaborative scholars and prepares them to make logical, evidence-based decisions.**
AP Capstone is comprised of two AP courses — AP Seminar and AP Research — and is designed to complement and enhance the discipline-specific study in other AP courses. The two AP Capstone courses, with their associated performance tasks, assessments, and application of research methodology, require students to analyze topics through multiple perspectives to construct meaning or gain understanding, plan and conduct a study or investigation, propose solutions to real-world problems, plan and produce communication in various forms, collaborate to solve a problem, integrate, synthesize, and make cross-curricular connections. **
Additionally, Piedmont College has entered into a partnership with the AP Capstone Program and has afforded our students access to all the same privileges extended to the college students in the media center, including the use of all the data bases, collections of books and periodicals, interlibrary loan, and media personnel support. The AP Capstone students are also welcomed to use the Piedmont College Library as a research base and a study location. This has been an invaluable asset for the AP Capstone students and a vital source of their success.
